Yanyu (Tommy) Chen – a 2020 graduate of Justin-Siena and a former Amerigo student – will be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall to pursue his Master’s Degree in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology!

Johns Hopkins is one of the world’s leading universities and is globally-known for its strong science program. Tommy is currently a senior at the University of California – Davis, where he’s studying Biological Sciences.

Tommy is grateful for the university guidance he received at Amerigo, and still looks back on his time at Justin-Siena fondly.

“Amerigo not only clarified the process of university application to me, but also helped me prepare for admission essays,” Tommy said. “I just want to express my appreciation to the faculty team in Amerigo. The emotional and academic support offered by the team greatly assisted me in adapting to a new environment and achieving academic success."

Tommy added that studying at Justin-Siena helped broaden his perspective and gave him the environment he needed to achieve such amazing academic success.

“My favorite thing about studying at Justin-Siena was the peaceful, respectful, and friendly environment that enabled me to make new friends and achieve academic success,” Tommy said. “Honestly, I would say that studying at Justin-Siena broadened my perspective and helped me to understand more of the different aspects of the world.”

Gina Walton was Tommy’s University Guidance Advisor (UGA) during his time at Amerigo Napa Valley, and she worked closely with him to ensure that he was prepared to apply to top universities. Amerigo's UGAs are specially trained to assist international students with their unique needs and applications in applying to American universities.

“My favorite moments with Tommy were the time spent during our group advisory activities,” Gina said “Tommy was able to try new things that were outside his comfort zone. As the Napa UGA during his Senior year, I was able to help Tommy with his college essay and applications and was so proud of his admittance to the University of California – Davis, where he will be graduating from this fall!”

Tommy had valuable advice to any international students thinking about coming to high school in the US.

“Remember to utilize the support services and academic resources offered by the school and organization,” he said. “These resources can help you to build a diverse network, get familiar with the local environment and culture, and improve your academic achievements.”
