J-1, F-1 or Amerigo Signature?
Compare the USA high school programs on visa, location, diploma, support and university outcomes.

What high school exchange program to choose is a question many families ask when they plan a year or more for their child in the U.S. The J-1 exchange, the standard F-1 route and Amerigo Signature can look alike from a distance. But, they are built for very different goals. J-1 and F-1 are U.S. visa types. Amerigo Signature is a program, and its U.S. students study on an F-1 visa. This guide shows how the three routes compare, so you can choose the one that fits your child.
What is a J-1 exchange year?
A J-1 exchange is a cultural year. You can’t choose where in the U.S. your child ends up. The city, school and host family are all assigned. The stay lasts one year at most. Many districts don’t award a diploma, and sport is often limited. Hosts are volunteers, and a coordinator checks in from time to time.
Best for: a cultural year, then graduating back home.
What is a standard F-1 route?
With a standard F-1 route, you get a school seat. You choose the school and where, from California to New York, and a private school can lead to a U.S. diploma. Homestay can come through a separate agency. Tutoring, university counseling and day-to-day oversight vary, cost extra, or fall to the family.
Best for: families ready to coordinate it all themselves.
What is Amerigo Signature?
Amerigo is built for families who want quality all the way through, the location they choose and a team that makes sure their child is supported every day.
In the U.S., Amerigo Signature students study on an F-1 student visa, just like students on the standard F-1 route. The difference is everything around the visa: Amerigo Signature is one team, inside the building, responsible for the support and a guaranteed outcome. Families choose school and destination; Southern California, New York and more, or Canada and the UK. Students can join school sports and earn a U.S. diploma at a hand-picked private school.
